Join us in the morning on Tuesday, November 1 at the Vegas Chamber for Community Conversations on the innovations and future of healthcare in Vegas.

We are reintroducing this event to the VYP programming. Community Conversations is an event offered by VYP that aims to provide young professionals insight into different aspects or current issues in the Vegas community. During Community Conversations, VYP members will hear from experts about topics relevant to young professionals and have meaningful conversations about ways to advance the Vegas Community. VYP members are encouraged to engage with the speakers, ask questions, voice their concerns, and offer solutions.

Panelists:

Maureen E. Schafer - CEO of Nevada Health & Bioscience Corporation and Executive Director of Council for a Better Nevada

Schafer is currently the President & CEO of the Nevada Health & Bioscience Asset Corporation (NHBC) whose focus is to build health capital, research and programmatic infrastructure for the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine at UNLV and Southern Nevada. She was previously the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine at UNLV’s founding Chief of Staff in 2014 to launch Las Vegas’s first four-year public allopathic School of Medicine which grew to nearly 400 physicians under a $160 million budget. Schafer also led the expansion and operations of the Cleveland Clinic Nevada and its flagship operation, the Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health focusing on the treatment and research of neurodegenerative disorders after leading the Las Vegas-based non-profit Keep Memory Alive (KMA) merger with the Cleveland Clinic as its Chief Executive Officer. She also leads a Nevada-based CEO group, the Council for a Better Nevada (CBN) as its Executive director. She is a director on the boards of Blueprint Sports, the Able Channel, Inc., a digital streaming healthcare platform and a member of Centene’s Nevada Silver Summit Board of Directors.

Ms. Schafer participates in various community & social board engagements. Current board affiliations include the Stanford Center for Longevity, Conservation International Leadership Council, the Nevada State Charter School Authority and Capability Health. Past board engagements include Opp180, as a founding Commissioner on the Nevada Commission on Homeland Security and as Chairman of the Nevada Community Foundation, where the Foundation’s endowment grew from $13 million to $150 million under her leadership.

Ms. Schafer holds a BS and an MBA from the George Washington University. (GWU) She has an MLA in Government from Harvard University. She has attended the Aspen Institute Executive Leadership Seminar.

Pedro "Joe" Greer, Jr., MD - Founding Dean of Roseman University College of Medicine

Dr. Greer joined the University on June 1, 2020 with the goal of establishing an innovative mid-21st Century, Las Vegas-based medical school that will align students, educators, and community in designing and delivering an inclusive and collaborate environment for learning, healthcare and research. Previously, Dr. Greer served as Professor of Medicine, Founding Chair of Humanities, Health, and Society; and Associate Dean for Community Engagement at Florida International University Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine in Miami, Florida.

Working with various FIU colleges, Dr. Greer spearheaded the nationally recognized Green Family Foundation Neighborhood Health Education Learning Program (NeighborhoodHELP). This program prepares medical students and other health professions students to address the social determinants of health through a hands-on longitudinal experience caring for underserved households in Miami-Dade County. Better known as “Joe,” Dr. Greer has been an advocate for health equity by engaging communities to create effective health and social policies and accessible health care systems.

He established Camillus Health Concern, Inc. and Saint John Bosco, health centers for underserved populations in Miami-Dade County, Florida. He has received numerous recognitions, including: one of the 500 Most Influential Business Leaders in Life Sciences listed on the Florida Trend 2019; June 2019 AMA Foundation Pride in Profession Award; Bob Graham Center for Public Service 2017 Citizen of the Year; 2014 National Jefferson Award in the category of Greatest Public Service Benefiting the Disadvantaged; 2013 Great Floridian Award; the 2009 Presidential Medal of Freedom; and in 1993, was honored as a MacArthur Foundation “Genius Grant” Fellow. He has published more than 30 articles and book chapters and wrote Waking Up in America, a book about his life experiences, including caring for homeless individuals and advising Presidents Bush Sr. and Clinton on health care policy. Dr. Greer is currently a Trustee at the RAND Corporation (America’s oldest and largest think tank) and is the Chair of the Pardee RAND Graduate School Board of Governors. He served as Chair for the Hispanic Heritage Awards Foundation from 2002 to 2012, and is an independent board member of American Funds 2016 to present.

He completed his medical studies at La Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra in the Dominican Republic. He trained in Internal Medicine, served as Chief Resident, and completed two post-doctoral fellowships (Hepatology and Gastroenterology) at the VA/University of Miami Miller School of Medicine in Miami, Florida. Before joining FIU, Dr. Greer ran a successful private practice and was Chief of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Mercy Hospital in Miami.

Andrea Davis - CEO of Viticus Group

Andrea Davis worked in various healthcare settings for the past 20+ years in Las Vegas, NV. Since 2019 Andrea Davis has been the CEO of Viticus Group (VG) formerly known as WVC. VG is a 95-year-old 501(c)(3) organization that proudly hosts one of the largest and most dynamic annual conferences in the Veterinary Industry. In addition to being a leader in continuing education, VG offers two state-of-the-art campuses, with a total of 140K+ square feet of medical training and meeting space. VG is the largest freestanding hands-on animal and human continuing education and training facility in the world.

Before entering the incredibly exciting and interesting world of Veterinary and Human Health Continuing Education, Andrea spent her career in Healthcare Administration. Prior to VG, Andrea held the positions of COO with UHS, CEO with HealthSouth, and a SVP of Operations with HCA. Prior to her leadership roles, Andrea spent several years in business development and pharmaceutical roles.

Andrea received her BS in Healthcare Administration from Oregon State University and her Master of Public Administration from UNLV. She became a Certified Lean Six Sigma Green Belt & Lean Six Sigma Black in 2016. She is on the Board of the Nevada Chapter of the American College of Healthcare Executives, Advisory Member for the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) Commission for a Diverse, Equitable, and Inclusive Veterinary Profession, and participates as a mentor in various animal and human health associations.  Andrea is also one of ten CEOs in Nevada that signed and committed to the CEO Action for Diversity and Inclusion pact.

Andrea has been married for the past 21 years to her husband Danny and they have two amazing teenagers and a furry Bugg (Boston/Pug) named Dug. When Andrea is not working, she loves spending time with friends and family, traveling, shopping, and eating great food.
