Medical Billing & Coding: What You Want to Know

Medicalbilling

Pima Medical Institute - Las Vegas recently issued the following announcement on August 23.

Students will learn the ins and outs of the medical billing and coding career in our hybrid program.

Is the medical billing and coding certification different in each state? What are the mental demands of a medical billing and coding person? Would technical writing be a good class to pair with medical billing and coding?

These are just a few of the unanswered questions we came across when researching what people are looking for when trying to find information about the medical billing and coding healthcare career. So, we decided to compile them and answer them below.

Is the medical billing and coding certification different in each state?

States don’t require medical billers and coders to be licensed. There are specific formats and guidelines you must abide by; however, state medical boards have not initiated any type of licensing requirement. It’s still very important to have your licensure, as it shows employers you’re qualified, gives you more job opportunities and gives you the confidence and knowledge to be prepared when you start. We do encourage you to check with the organization that issues your certification exam, such as the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) and the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) for clarification on state requirements.

What are the mental demands of a medical billing and coding professional?

Medical billers and coders should be able to work under deadlines and be very structured. You should have a solid knowledge of the codes for the medical processes and procedures the doctor performs. You must be able to pay close attention to detail and be able to communicate well with the patient, doctor, healthcare team and insurance companies. For some people, this career is not that difficult or stressful, especially those who are well organized.

Would technical writing be a good class to pair with medical billing and coding?

At Pima Medical, business writing and electronic health records is a course you will take during our program to prepare you for just that. However, if you need additional training for medical writing, then taking an additional course in technical writing could be beneficial to you.

Is medical coding and billing a targeted occupation?

There is always a need for medical billers and coders in the healthcare industry, especially now more than ever. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of medical records and health information technicians is projected to grow 8 percent from 2019 to 2029, much faster than the average for all occupations. The demand for health services is expected to increase along with the number of people in older age groups.

What can I be studying to prepare for my medical billing and coding class?

If you’d like to get a head start before beginning the medical billing and coding program with us, we recommend to start studying basic medical terminology, human anatomy and physiology and medical coding.

We hope this has been helpful with your decision on entering the medical billing and coding field! If you’d like to begin working toward your future in this healthcare career, then get started today.
